Facebook at the Beach - Part 2

September 23-25

It's been an interesting September.  I have only been home for 1 weekend and all the rest have been Facebook weekends.  Or at least had Facebook elements to them.

September 23 was Girls Weekend in Ocean City, MD.  My girlfriend Terri's boyfriend lives in Ocean City and we took advantage of him going to a Penn State Game in Happy Valley.  Terri, Gretchen, Lisa (Facebook friends), Sally, Julie and I spent the weekend doing girl things.  "What happens in Ocean City stays in Ocean City."  And since I'm not in Ocean City... well, I don't think I can say much more.

Terri and I have known each other for 16 years.  WOW!  She started in our office in August and I started in November.  I still don't like the music she listens to.  Well, most of it.  We call Terri Blonde & Bossy in the office, and when she's away, I try to fill her shoes.  She's been an incredibly good friend.  We've been through 2 divorces (her & mine) and all sorts of other trials and tribulations.  And... I still don't like her choice of radio station.   Gretchen & Lisa have both been at the office longer than Terri & me.  Lisa was in the basement in the computer department ... and we tease her that when they brought her up into the light she bloomed.  Gretchen is an auditor in our office and is always up for fun. Sally is our Payroll Manger and Julie is the big boss.  We had a great weekend... despite the rain.

Soooo.... since I can't really talk about it. That's the end of this story other than it was fun to bond with my co-workers.

Facebook at the Beach

Every year, the 3rd weekend in September, 3 things happen: My David has a birthday, it's International Talk Like a Pirate Day and it's the Wings & Water Festival in Stone Harbor. It is the 3rd which has become an annual Facebook Adventure with Michelle.

Michelle and I went to high school together, and to be honest at best didn't hang out together. All I really remember about her is she hung out with the brainy kids, which equals she was one of the brainy kids in my memory. Facebook is an amazing thing. We have become buds on FB and in real life. Michelle is a hoot. She always makes me laugh on FB. So now she has become part of the Wings & Water weekend.

This year Chef was working and "5 Star" (son #1) is off to college so "Mini Einstein" and "Daddy's Little Girl" came along. I will freely admit, a full day with kids can some times be trying. Especially when they are whiney little brats. That being said, it just wasn't the case. Michelle's spawn are both delightful and well behaved. Last year "Daddy's Little Girl" came a long and we had a good time then too. Even when Michelle and I spent almost an hour just chatting, both kids didn't make a fuss or whine or even get restless. They must take after their father (JUST KIDDING!).

Mom & I have been coming to the Wings & Water Festival for years. And it's fun to have someone my own age to hang out with and have fun. This year the W&WF was a lot smaller than previous years. They really don't advertise like they should. But the Wetlands Institute is a neat place, and every year I find something that I didn't see previously.

Michelle is the proud Dog Mom to Lily. Lily is a retriever of unknown linage. She could be full bred. Perhaps not. But every year there is a Retriever Demonstration. The dogs are put through their training paces. I love it. And it's now part of the FB W&WF tradition. Just to compare what Lily COULD do if she weren't spoiled rotten. And of course there are the cinnamon almonds. After that it's up to the group to what we do and see. Except for the quilts. Mom didn't have one in the show this year, but "Mini Einstein" & "Daddy's Little Girl" seem to like them anyway.

Then it's off to Springer's for ice cream. Another part of the tradition. This is the last weekend Springer's is open. And they have the BEST homemade ice cream (they were voted #2 in the country in a poll, but I think it was rigged and they should have been #1). In the summer they are so busy it's hard to get in, but with this being the last hurah - it's not hard to get in to get a cone, or a cup or a cone in a cup.

And so, that has become the FB W&WF tradition and I know I will get to see Michelle at least once a year.

Unintentional Facebook Dinner

It turns out that my Fantasy Football draft was a Facebook dinner as well!  I even picked up two friends at dinner.

We had our draft at Rock Bottom Brewery in King of Prussia.  It was fun. It's pretty much the only time I see Brenda and Lori-An.  Lori-An had just adopted the most adorable little boy.

I met both Lori-An & Brenda through Nealla.  Nealla and Carissa work with me.  And finally my two new friends are County employees too -  Stacey & Marilyn.

The draft is always fun. We get together for dinner before we started the draft.  Carissa, Marilyn & Stacey were new to our league this year.  I always get lost getting there. I have this stupid mental block of where Rock Bottom is.  It's got really good Mac & Cheese.

27, 28 and Home

08/27/11 - Saturday
Today's activities started with the Car Show in downtown Lewiston.  There were a lot of neat cars there.  I love the old Mustangs.  Then it was off to the Thai place for a delightful lunch with Al, his wife & son.  All 3 are neat people.  Then we went up to Nez Perce National Historical Park museum.  It was small, but it was very interesting, with a lot of artifacts. Including a satin ribbon given to the Nez-Perce chief by Lewis & Clark. The bead work on the outfits is amazing.  We joined a talk in process, which turned out to be part of a wedding party.  The Elder of Nez-Perce's granddaughter was marrying a nice Jewish boy.  It was an interesting talk and we didn't know we were crashing the party until the bride & groom stood up and thank friends and family for joining them in their celebration.  Brooke & Edward (or Scott) asked everyone to introduce themselves.  Which was a little embarrassing.  We stopped at Wendt Pottery to get gifts, but when we first drove up, they were closed.  Mr. Wendt was still there and opened the shop just for us!  How sweet and I got EXACTLY want I wanted!

Next was home for dinner with Mom & Dad and then off to the Guess Who concert.  I got to meet Quinn's wife Stacy and a couple other folks.  I got to meet so many people I keep forgetting who I met.  And then we went to a bar ... don't ask me the name ... and exploding out the front door came MaryAnn Mattson.  The bouncer got a kick out of her. It was wonderful to meet her.  What a sweetie!

08/28/11 - Sunday.
Today was a trip up to Spokane to have lunch with Byron McLean.  Unfortunately we didn't get to meet his Beloved Tina (she had to work).  The food was yummy.  My first Korean.  And I got to eat Kimchee!  It was good.  I like cabbage and I like spicy and kimchee is both.  Doug took me the long way home and we stopped at Steptoe Butte in Washington State.  It was a long day of driving around, but I got to see a ton of the country up there.  It's a beautiful country.

08/29/11 - Monday.
Time to come home.  The flight into Lewiston only took a 1/2 hour.  Well, with crossing time zones it was.  But on the way back it was 2.5 hours.  I was lucky with my seat mate on the flight to Salt Lake City was a delightful gentleman named Anthony.  He was in town for a wedding.  You guessed it, it was Brooke & Scott's wedding that we crashed on Saturday.  Doug & I were the talk of the wedding.  Which would have been very interesting, and we would have been invited to join.  It was 2 services; a traditional Nez-Perce service and then a traditional Jewish wedding.  Both outside in 105 degree weather.  I had a 2.5 hour lay over in Salt Lake City.  It gave me plenty of time to get something to eat and stretch and relax.  I'm now addicted to Starbucks Blueberry Strawberry Yogurt Parfaits.

The next flight was full.  And they were asking everyone to check all extra bags.  It was going to be one of those sit cramped flights.  When I got back to my row it was with 2 gentlemen and one was 6' 6".  But they moved him back up to the front where "shorty" could have more leg room.  I had the aisle seat and my seat mate had the window.  He was claustrophobic and preferred the aisle and I preferred the window.  So we switched and were both happy and waited for the middle seat person to show up.  We ended up being the only row that had only 2 people.  Thank you Jesus!!!  We were able to "stretch" out a bit and it made the flight SO much more enjoyable!  And when I got to Philly ... the sexiest man in the world was there to take me home.

I had a delightful trip.  Mom & Doug Graham are just wonderful people who opened their home to me.  They were wonderful hosts and made me feel like one of the family.  Doug was a wonderful tour guide. I got to see a ton of the area.  I had a great time and am looking forward to my next trip out there.

Another Full Day!

08/26/11
Ok. I slept a bit longer than I planned. It was 10:30. We watched RED with Mom, Dad & Anthony. I love that movie.

Then Doug took me to the Strike and Spare for a GIGORNDO sandwich. It was really good. Al Halsey was able to stop by briefly. It was great to meet him. We are going to have lunch tomorrow. Thai! I always think of Karen (no longer) Rios.

Then it was off to Walmart to buy the few things I need for the trip home. A neck roll so I can nap, a puzzle book for when I am awake and of course, Excedrin. And JACK POT. I found the toiletries bag I was looking for and a magazine for the flight/lay over.

After Walmart we drove up to the Nez Perce reservation and Spaulding. We didn’t stop at the museum, that will be tomorrow if we can. On the way home we stopped at Train Park where Doug used to play as a kid.
After dinner with Mom & Dad we went to the Hideaway to meet Law & Mynx. The first thing I hear when I walk into the bar – from across the bar – was TACIE! It is so good to see Law & Mynx. I wish we lived closer to them. I got to meet Law’s niece Kelly. Which was a nice extra! There was a whole group of very nice people at the bar. After Law left Quinn Yates showed up. We left after about 2 hours. It didn’t seem that long!

I finally got my postcards, which I must send tomorrow.

Tomorrow is another full day.

Idaho – Day 2

08/26/11
After a very long 12 hour nap… we are up and getting ready to go. Not sure what is on today’s adventure list – except lunch and WalMart – but it’s hot and getting hotter.

Party on Garth!

Long DAY

08/25/11
WOW. It has been a very long day!!! First – what an adorable airport! When I got off the plane, the fist person I saw wasn’t who I was expecting. It was Andrew (Geoff). Very Cool!!! One down! And then I saw dug with his annoying pudding sign. Two down!

What a sweet family! It’s almost like being at home. If home were 2000 miles west and in the mountains. :-) . More tomorrow. I’m bushed.

10,000 feet up

8/25/11
Let the adventure begin.
Surprisingly we were on time for the airport. Which turned out to be a really good thing because my non-expired drivers license is in my other bag. By the time we had gotten it sorted, it was too late to check my bag. I think the lady at check in made an exception. So we’ll see if I have clothes when I get to Idaho. :-)

The flight so far has been pretty bumpy. And as soon as I see the mighty Mississippi (are we to far north ?) it’s nap time.

Next stop Salt Lake City, Utah.

Count Down to Take Off

In 33 hours I will be leaving on a jet plane ... to go meet a bunch of my Facebook friends!  I'm really looking forward to my trip, but will miss my Beloved David and my kitties.  But one can't have an adventure from the couch.  Look out Lewiston! Here I come!

Facebook Luncheon

On Friday 8/19/11 I got a most wonderful e-mail from my friend Bob Bendesky.  He has time to take a long lunch would I like to go get a Tacie? Let’s step back.  About 2 weeks ago, I went to my new favorite take out place Sarcone’s Deli.  They have excellent hoagies and the most excellent cheese steaks.  Justin & Kurt and the rest of the gang are FOCUSED on customer satisfaction too.  I had a hankering for a piece of pizza and they have what they call Flatbread pizza. It’s kinda like Stouffer’s French Bread Pizza only better – MUCH better.  I was in the mood for pizza and got my taste buds all hopped up for mozzarella, sharp provolone, red sauce & basil. And guess what – they made it for me!  And it turned out to be an awesome combo of flavors.  And low and behold the Guys at Sarcone’s made it their Flat of the Week and called it the Tacie.  (Ok…. I’m EXTREMELY flattered and vaguely embarrassed.)  And of course I had to promote the Flat! Not that I wasn’t already promoting Sarcone’s.  They put Mountain Dew in for me too!  How awesome is that?!?  You don’t have to answer that. It’s AWESOME!

I met Bob through Mare. I’ve known Maribeth since High School.  Mare suggested Bob & I become FB friend because “Bob is really interesting.”  It’s true. Bob & his wife Cozy are really very interesting.  They are Revolutionary War re-enactors (http://6pahome.com/).  Cozy is an artist/seamstress/wonder woman.  She makes the authentic clothes they wear for the 6th PA.  Very cool.  One of these days I’m going to have to get my butt to one of the re-enactments and get some smarts from the 6th.  The 1st time I met Bob we had dinner at … some sports bar in King of Prussia.  It was fun. He and I got there 1st and so we had a bit of time to chat before everyone else got there.  The next time we got together for a FB lunch … our 1 lunch took 6 hours. It was fun. Our next lunch only was 4 hours because we all had things to do.  =)   I’m sure there will be another of our “short” lunches after the summer is over.

So after bragging about my pizza on FB, Bob decided to join me for a piece of me.  Luckily Bob works in West Chester and could take a long lunch on Friday. So in to WC he came and because I sent him the wrong way out of the parking lot he discovered Carlino’s Italian Market.  It’s one of my favorite places to eat, but they didn’t name a pizza after me nor do they have Mountain Dew, so they are a bit further down the list.  But they do have a remarkable variety and really good food too.  Back down the street we went to get a Tacie.  Bob enjoyed it and we had a delightful lunch and talk about a lot of different things from Cancer research to cheese steaks to cruise and more.

I always enjoy talking to Bob and enjoyed lunch.  Now I am full of me and looking forward to our next meeting.  Next FB meal will be Monday with some co-workers and then Thursday I go winging off to Idaho to meet the Lewistonians!

First Stop on the FB World Tour

7/5/11
I had my 1st official stop on the Facebook world tour. And it was appropriately with my oldest friend. Oldest as in I've known him the longest. Not oldest in age, because we aren't old.  I'm probably going to say the same thing when we are 80, but still - we aren't that old.

My friend Dave Ankers and I went to Nudy's Cafe in West Chester for lunch. I forgot to get a picture. You will forgive me, I'm new at this.

I first met Dave when we were 7  (He has always been David to me, but he prefers Dave... so Dave it is.  Although it is hard to call him that.)  and large due to him, we have kept in touch ever since.  Oddly, one of my fondest memories (it always makes me smile) was of The Who concert at the Vet.  I was living in York and he called to say he had 12 row seats, did I want to go.  ABSOLUTELY!  And then he called back, the seats were actually in the 25 row, he'd understand if I didn't want to go.  Really? No... I think I'll survive in row 25.  We could still see Rodger Daltrey's ear clip from where we were.

This was one of the last times Dave is going to be in West Chester.  He & Chris are moving to New Orleans by the end of July (2011).

It's always fun to have lunch with Dave.  And I think this was our shortest lunch.  Nudy's was chosen because Dave's brother swears by the place and Carlino's has just way too many choices.  And it works for me - I can see it from the window in my office.  Dave had a Reuben, which looked really good, I'm going to have to try it.  I had pancakes and a side of bacon.  We had a wonderful talk - as always.  I am going to miss Dave's periodic jaunts to West Chester.  I guess I will just have to have periodic jaunts to New Orleans!

Facebook Adventures

After thinking a bit more about my new adventure I’ve decided on a couple of things.

1. I’m going to start from scratch so the wonderful spaghetti dinner – although my 1st adventure – isn’t going to count.  So, I’ll just have to go visit Cozy & Bob again.

2. I’m not going to visit ALL my Facebook friends.  Just those with whom I have had conversation.  I have a bunch of game friends that I’ve never interacted with other than to send game requests.  So those folks are going to be excluded.  And of course there is a but… there’s always a butt.  Some of the famous folks on my friend list don’t interact with me, but they are still on the visit list assuming I can get an appointment/date.  =)

3. No time limit… just a money limit.  Since I have friends all over the world and of various levels of fame, some are going to be harder than others.  Like getting a dinner date with my Beloved David is going to be a WHOLE lot easier than getting even 5 minutes with Mike Rowe.  But with time and persistance all things can be accomplished.  Right? Right!
4. Group gatherings count.  We have a dinner every year around Christmas and that grabs about 10 or so friends.  And then there’s the Facebook lunch we have periodically.  Which is a ton of fun… I highly recommend doing it.  And then there’s the Lewiston Crew… that should be a fun trip.

Proximity is going to be a big thing too.  I know I’ll get to those folks in my immediate area sooner than someone on the other side of the world.  Which is why there’s no time limit.  Getting Down Under is going to take a lot more planning than say dinner with South Eastern PA, Delaware, NJ friends.

5. Language barrier.  This is one I have to think about.  Do I really want to visit someone who won’t understand a lick of what I’m saying?  This is a definite maybe.  Although, if I don’t speak the same language as they do #2 is probably going to kick in.

So… “Party on Garth. …”

Facebook World Tour

I've decided I want to do a Facebook World Tour. I want to visit my Facebook friends in the town in which they live for a meal, a drink, or an extended stay. Whatever is most appropriate based on proximity to my home and their tolerance of my presence!

This is going to be super easy for some, like my Beloved. He's very tolerant of my presence. And he's close! Then there's gonna be some that are a little harder. The Mythbusters are going to be a bit of a challenge. We'll work on that one later.
Off I go on my new adventure, which I actually started some time ago. I'll write more when a) it's not midnight and I have to get up for work and b) I'm not on a hand held!

As the old saying goes... "Party on Garth. ..."

Converting a PDF file to a Kindle for iPhone readable version.

A girlfriend gave me a copy of her book in a PDF format and I wanted to put it in my Kindle for iPhone so I could take it with me. I looked around on the next and got part here, part there, and a lot of bad info along the way. Once I finally figured it out, it is so easy. It took me most of a day to research it, but once I realized how to do it I had a total “D’oh!!!” moment.  So since I couldn’t find the exact directions anywhere else … I’m making my own.  Follow the pink arrows on the pictures (which you can click on to make bigger).  They will show you where to go.

What you need.
1. PDF you want to convert into an Kindle for iPhone readable format.
2. Mobipocket Creator software (free download at http://www.mobipocket.com/en/DownloadSoft/DownloadCreator.asp).

Assumptions:
1. You have a PC with iTunes installed.
2. You have Kindle for iPhone installed.
3. You know how to save files in directories and then find them again later.
4. You know how to find & open programs.
5. You can be a little patient. (This is VERY hard for me sometimes.)

What you do.
Make sure you are synced up with iTunes.  This is only just in case you have a problem you are all backed up (this is just the IT coming out).

Keep your iPhone connected to your PC.

Install Mobipocket Creator.  You must have the Creator.

Start Mobipocket Creator.  Open your PDF by clicking the “Adobe PDF” link under the “Import From Existing File” menu on the home page (see the pink arrow on the image below).

Click the “Browse” button and click on your file name and click “Open”.

Then click “Import”.  The status bar will show you your import.

Click the “Build” button along the top row.

Pause a moment.  If you are feeling adventurous, explore the options on the right hand side (Cover Image, Table of Contents, Book settings, Metadata, Guide).  I’m not going into them here, but would be happy to answer any questions.

Click the “Build” button.

You are now ready to import your file into you Kindle for iPhone.
Open iTunes

Click on your iPhone (mine is called iPhone but yours may have another name) on the left hand menu bar.
Click on “Apps” at the top.

Scroll down.
Click on Kindle

Click on the “Add…” button.

Find your newly created “prc” file.  It should be in “My Documents” “My Publications” and then look for a subdirectory with the name of the PDF file. In this case the subdirectory is  “Love Unscripted”.

Click on the file name with the “prc” extension. Then click the “Open” button.

Your file will appear in the list box and your iPhone will automatically sync.

The next time you open your Kindle for iPhone an additional file (a “mbp” file) will be added to the list box.

DO NOT DELETE THESE FILES! If you delete them they will be removed from your Kindle as well and you will have to do this whole thing all over again.

Tah-Dah!!!

You now have your converted PDF in you Kindle for iPhone.
